Where I grew up in Florida with little knowledge of what a bike should be. Now it Colorado after becoming a Pro at 20, now 37, I think :) …. I have learned a ton.
I rode for Profile Racing. They are a beast at building the best stuff money can buy. The BMX team would always run short cranks. So after a while I made the jump to 165 cranks. The way I was described to use short cranks is you are closer to the bottom bracket. Utilizing balance. Spinning 360s and like things get easier.
Now if you love your bike don’t change it. But as a upgrade goes trying to be a better jumper, park rider, etc. I think this is one of the first purchases you should make.
Most bikes come with 175mm cranks. But slopestyle freeride and dirtjump are around 160 to 150mm. So if you’re having trouble learning tricks or jumping, I hope you check these out. For me personally I use the Cam Zink signature Cranks on my dirtjumper.
Now you shouldn’t go shorter cranks if you are mostly pedaling and enjoy your current setup. Here’s mine. Hope you support this page and look forward to more!
